Haven’t been posting a lot lately because 1) I got into grad school! 2) I’ve been taking classes and working full time 3) I’ve also been volunteering for (first) Portland Farmers Market and (then) Kitchen Commons and 4) obviously I’m crazy for doing all of this at the same time and expecting to blog regularly.
I’m going to try to be a more responsible blogger as the quarter winds down!

The industrial providers of single solutions assume that the agricultural structure of a country, a region, or a farm can be built piecemeal of disparate single parts — parts that do not necessarily, or even probably, fit the other parts of the farm or local ecosystem, and yet will ultimately resolve into a coherent, sensible, even sustainable pattern determined by the disposition of the market. This obviously is nonsense.
Fewer than 50 percent of those who responded to the community survey had access to a vehicle, cooking facilities, safe food storage, or utilities. All of which help explain why prepackaged foods may seem like an easier option to people in food deserts.
